Rose For Emily Essays (875 words) - A Rose For Emily, Emily Grierson

Rose For Emily The Reason the main character, Emily Grierson, in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" murdered her lover, Homer Barron, was a combined contribution of the society she lived in. The cousin's snootiness and high expectations of the Grierson family legacy made it difficult for Emily and Homer to be together as a couple. "The two female cousins were more Grierson than Miss Emily had ever been." (5) The cousins would keep Emily in line because they were more aristrocatic, therefore forcing Emily into keeping the family name pure by not being with a labor worker who often got drunk and liked men. The cousins had a talk with Emily, which drove Homer out for a short period of time. For fear of Homer leaving her, she ventured to the local pharmacy to purchase arsenic (then used as rat poison) for what she believed might be the only way to keep the man she loved from leaving her. Emily's father scared all her suitors away, believing that she was too good for all of them, which in turn left her single at a very old age. Emily's over-possessive, father traumatized her into believing that she would be alone all of her life. "The ?Patrimony of a man' destroys Emily as her father smothers her with over-protectiveness. He prevents her from courting anymore" (Internet 1). Her father never gave her the opportunity of a happy, joyful family life, which every person deserves. Her father never gave her the opportunity of a happy, joyful family life, which every person deserves. When her father died and she found someone she liked, she instantly became attached to this man and was not willing to let him go. "Emily decides she will be vindictive, she will have her man"(Internet 2). Emily chose the first man possible in a sort of way to lash back at the father who never allowed her to have what she desired the most, companionship. With her father now deceased, she had complete freedom in choosing and keeping any suitor she found acceptable. Having never had the opportunity, Emily had no concept of how to treat and be a companion to the opposite sex. This would explain the unbreakable attachment to the first man who came along, Homer Barron. In a way she took what she could get at that moment thinking that there might never be another chance for her again, therefore she settled for Homer Barron. All of the town's pity, gossip, and assumptions about Emily and her family brought on more stress and insanity about keeping the Grierson name aristocratic and clean. In essence, she was living up to the family standards set by that of her local society. "Her father and the townsfolk that see her as an untouchable idol perpetrate this dementia; the loneliness that they force her to endure is maddening" (Internet 1). At times the town felt sorrow for her and had thoughts of consoling her but never actually put them into action. They always let her endure everything she was suffering on her own. Although they no longer had any reason to be, the women of the town still felt a pang of jealousy towards her family aristocracy and history. The women, to satisfy their own consciences, acted as if they actually felt sympathy for Emily, where in all honesty, not a single one cared for her in any way. The town merely wanted to put up a false front. Homer Baron, who was very inconsiderate and casual about her past, contributed to his own murder. Homer Barron was a bi-sexual, Yankee, drunk who was going to leave her after he had his way with her. She knew this from the town's gossip and she was growing more and more insecure about Homer. "We can imagine, however the outcome might have been had Homer Barron, who was not the marrying man, succeeded, in the town's eyes, in seducing her and then deserting her." (Short Story criticisms 150) Homer was seen drinking at the bar with men and it was known that he was interested in men. Homer was never really intending to stay long term with Emily. He was just a passer by who was only there for road construction. "And when she lost him she could see that for her that was the end of life, there was nothing left except to grow older, alone, solitary." (Internet 2) The thing she feared the most was being alone with no companion. Emily had endured all of this

Can You Actually â€Å"Hack† the ACT? To a limited extent, yes. The strategies in this article may lead to a small increase in your scores, but they won’t fix major issues you have with the content of the test.Understanding the format and how to get around some of the trickier parts of the ACT is important, but there’s no substitute for in-depth studying. Consider these tips as supplements to your regular studying rather than cure-alls for your more serious issues with the material on the test. We’ve written a guide on how to study for the ACT that you can check out for more insight into the review process. Overall ACT Hacks Here are some techniques that you can use on all parts of the ACT to earn the best possible score on each section. #1: Skip Hard Questions at First On every section of the ACT, you need to pace yourself carefully to avoid running out of time before you get to all of the questions. If you come across a question that completely stumps you, don’t linger. Struggling with one question for too long can damage your scores because it takes up time you could have used to answer easier questions later in the section. You can always come back to the questions you skipped if you have time, but you shouldn’t prioritize one tricky question over getting through the section before time is called. #2: Fill in an Answer Bubble for Every Question The ACT has noguessing penalty, so it’s in your best interests to fill in an answer choice for every question on the test.Even if there are only 30 seconds remaining in a section and you have five questions left, you should fill in those bubbles at random in case you get lucky. If you do, you’ll earn more points, and if you don’t, your score will be no different than if you’d left the questions blank. #3: Know the Test Structure Since this is a standardized test, you should prepare by becoming familiar with how it’s structured. If nothing on the test comes as a surprise to you, you’ll feel much more relaxed. You'll be able devote all of your mental energy to understanding the content rather than navigating an unexpected test format. This article provides a complete guide to the format of the ACT, including skills tested, number of questions, and length of each section. #4: Use Process of Elimination Process of elimination is the most effective strategy for answering questions on the ACT.It’s much easier for look for reasons to get rid of answers than it is to pick the correct choice out of the lineup right away.Be picky about what it means for an answer to be correct. This is especially applicable to questions in the English and Reading sections. If you can’t find evidence in the passage that definitively supports an answer choice, get rid of it! You don't have to guess what's behind each door - you'll be able to find clues that rule out 3 out of 4 answers. If you answer correctly, you'll get a brand new karaoke machine. Be sure to claim your prize from the College Board. You deserve this. ACT English Hacks Here are a few tricks specific to the English section that will help you find the answers to questions that might otherwise stump you. #5: Choose the Most Concise Answer The essence of good writing is saying what you mean in the most accurate way without any extra unnecessary words. When you’re trying to decide between a few different phrasings for a sentence in the English section, usually the least wordy choice is correct. There are exceptions to this rule, but it’s enough of a common trend that if you’re totally stumped by a question, picking the shortest answer is a fairly safe bet. #6: Tread Carefully With NO CHANGE Answers Many students are either too wary of NO CHANGE answers or too eager to pick them.Always double check before choosing NO CHANGE, but if you genuinely feel that it’s the right answer, try not to doubt yourself too much.NO CHANGE answers make up around a quarter of the correct responses to questions where they’re presented as an option. Don’t assume that a NO CHANGE option is any less likely to be correct compared to the other choices. #7: Read Around the Question Context is important on ACT English because all the questions are based on longer passages. When answering a question about the structure of a sentence, you should always read the entire sentence, not just the part that you’re asked to revise. It might even be helpful to read the preceding and following sentences so that you can get a feel for how the different answer choices affect the flow of the passage. This will help you see that some phrasings sound more awkward than others when considered in a larger context. Context is always important. For all we know, this is just a disembodied pair of arms underneath a pile of clothes. ACT Math Hacks The Math section is the most challenging part of the ACT for many students. Here are some hacks that will help you get through tough problems. #8: Plug In Answers The great thing about multiple choice tests is that the correct answer is always right there in front of you - all you have to do is find it. Thismeans that you can often work backward to find the correct answers to math problems on the ACT even if you’re not sure of the actual solution method. This can take longer than just solving the problem the old-fashioned way, so it shouldn’t be your first move, but if you’re stumped it’s a viable way to solve problems successfully. #9: Use the Diagrams Diagrams on the Math section exist to help you, so make sure you take advantage of them.Diagrams are useful in estimating the correct answer even if you aren’t sure how to solve the problem. If you need to calculate a dimension of a shape, for example, consider how large that dimension looks compared to other parts of the diagram that are already labeled. In doing this, you can ensure that your answer makes logical sense. #10: Memorize Important Formulas The ACT doesn’t give you a list of formulas like the SAT, so you have to know the most commonly used formulas off the top of your head.Make sure you take a bit of time to review this list of formulas before the test. For example, you should know that the cosine of angle B in this image is equivalent to the length of side C divided by the length of side a. ACT Reading Hacks The Reading section involves a great deal of time pressure and high-level reading comprehension skills. These strategies will help you on the road to overcoming these challenges. #: Decide Whether to Skim or Skip You should go into the Reading section with a strategy in mind for how you want to approach the passages. Some people can read the passages normally all the way through and still make it to the end of the section, but for most students, it’s smart to adopt a more efficient alternative approach. One option is to skim the passage before starting work on the questions. This usually means reading the intro paragraph, first and last sentences of each body paragraph, and conclusion paragraph. These parts of the passage usually provide the most critical information about the central topic. Another option is to skip the passage initially and head straight for the questions. You can answer questions about small details by going back and searching for them in the passage.Save the broader questions for last after you’ve already gotten a handle on what the passage is about by putting together the smaller details.Experiment with each of these strategies on practice tests so you know what works best for you and saves you the most time. #12: Read Your Favorite Subject First In the ACT Reading section, the passages are always in the same order with regards to their subject matter. You can take advantage of this by determining the optimal order in which to read the passages beforehand. It’s best to start with the subject matter or writing style that you feel most comfortable reading because you’ll get through that passage faster than the others and probably won't struggle as much with the questions. It would be a bad idea to save the subject you like most for last because you might run out of time before getting to that question set. #13: Always Find Direct Evidence You should never make assumptions to get to your answers to questions on the Reading section. If you think that two answers seem equally valid, reread the relevant part of the passage and carefully analyze the evidence. There is only one irrefutably correct answer, and you'll always be able to point to something in the passage that gives it away. The resigned pain in this child's eyes resembles the attitude with which most students approach ACT Reading passages. ACT Science Hacks Here are a few ACT hacksyou can use to make the science section a little less intimidating and more manageable. #14: Save Conflicting Viewpoints for Last Conflicting viewpoints is the most time-consuming part of the ACT Science section for almost every student. It involves much more reading than the other parts of the section, which mostly consist of data interpretation. It’s best to save conflicting viewpoints for last so youcan get through all the quicker passages first. #15: Visuals Are Your Friends The ACT science section appears complicated because there are detailed explanations of experimental procedures combined with diagrams and charts. However, most of this information only exists to make you freak out about all the stuff you think you don’t understand. You can ignore most of the background information and just focus on the data provided in the visuals when answering questions. These questions are mostly based on logic, not complex science. #16: Don’t Bother Studying Science Terms The Science section on the ACT doesn’t have much in common with the tests that you’ve taken in high school science classes. It’s not necessary to study terms because there won’t be any obscure concepts that you need to understand independently.Anything obscure that you need to know to answer the questions will be defined for you in the passage.Succeeding on the Science section is about getting used to the format and digging down to the logical core of each question. Science is tooooootally tubular. ACT Writing Hacks If you’re taking the ACT with Writing, here are some ways to ensure that you end up with a decent score even if you’re not completely confident in your writing abilities. #17: Include an Introduction and Conclusion Introductions and conclusions are the most important aspects of any ACT essay. The graders pay close attention to the first and last paragraphs of each essay because they provide insight into the quality of the rest of your writing. The introduction is even more critical to your score than the conclusion because it includes a thesis statement, which gives the reader a preview of the rest of your essay.Make sure your intro contains a clear thesis statement that will make it easy for the grader to give you points! #18: Write at Least Two Pages There’s no official length requirement for the ACT essay, but you should aim for at least two pages of writing to ensure that your argument is fully developed.Essays that are less than two pages typically score lower because they don’t include enough details or explain their ideas completely. If you have an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion, making your essay at least two pages probably won’t be an issue. Conclusion: How to Hack the ACT You need to have strong fundamental knowledge of the content to earn a high score, but there are still a few simple ACT hacks you can use to make the test easier for yourself without doing a bunch of extra studying. Here's a consolidated list of all the strategies I've gone over in this article: Overall ACT Hacks Skip Hard Questions at First Fill in An Answer for Every Question Know the Test Structure Use Process of Elimination ACT English Hacks Choose the Most Concise Answer Tread Carefully with NO CHANGE Answers Read Around the Question ACT Math Hacks Plug in Answers Use the Diagrams Memorize Important Formulas ACT Reading Hacks Decide Whether to Skim or Skip Read Your Favorite Subject First Look for Direct Evidence ACT Science Hacks Save Conflicting Viewpoints for Last Visuals Are Your Friends Don't Bother Studying Science Terms ACT Writing Hacks Include an Introduction and Conclusion Write at Least Two Pages These tactics will help you become a more efficient and confident test-taker as long as you use them in tandem with a responsible long-term study plan! The Economic Impacts within the Oil and Natural Gas Industries Research Paper

The Economic Impacts within the Oil and Natural Gas Industries - Research Paper Example it has employed numerous Americans to participate in the exploration of new oil fields, production, processing, supply, and marketing of the oil and natural gas. It also buys the intermediate raw materials from the U.S. producers. This has led to industrial development, thus, leading to creation of more jobs. America is in the middle of an oil and natural gas revolution, which has the potential of significantly affecting the environment, national security and most importantly the economy. It is now able to tap into enormous stores of oil and natural gas locked in shale deposits around the country, thanks to technology breakthroughs. These include horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing also referred to as fracking and seismic imaging. These new possibilities will enable the country to replace coal as a source of energy with cleaner and environmental friendly natural gas (Friedman, 2012). The shale oil and natural gas boom however has been a mixed blessing for the independent oil an d gas firms. While technology breakthroughs have helped to open up new vast areas for exploration and production, the natural gas prices have been on the lower side creating challenges for the production companies. This is because, these companies are trying to justify the cost of production but the lower gas prices are making it harder for them. Current gas prices only provide these companies with marginal profit possibility at best considering the high production costs. While crude oil prices keep rising, standing currently at $93 per barrel, prices for natural gas remain stuck at $2.96 per a thousand cubic feet (Contagion oil & gas, 2010). Economists hope that natural gas will substitute crude oil considering gas is cheaper relative to energy produced. This however, is not likely to happen with production companies seeking to shift from production of natural gas to crude oil to correct the financial imbalance (Contagion oil & gas, 2010). According to an article published in finan cial times, companies may be looking to shift from natural gas to production of oil. Many production companies are looking to sell off their natural gas assets for a chance to participate in the booming shale oil market. While much attention has been paid to large quantities of natural gas shale, companies have realized that with newer technology, they can extract oil too. The article states that by 2010, the number of companies drilling oil in the country had increased from 180 in 2009 to 720 (Contagion oil & gas, 2010). Chesapeake, the second largest gas producer in the country, stated that it was reducing its gas production by 7 percent by the year 2013. This would bring down the company’s record of 23 years in which it has managed to increase to its production every year. The company officials commented that gas production would continue to decline if the prices kept on going down. This is because current prices will not allow companies to make an attractive return on the ir investments particularly in light of the investment costs incurred in developing the new unconventional gas fields that are likely to increase gas production for the next five years (Ridder, 2012). While a reduction in gas production would be considered a negative thing, today it is not. In fact, investors and analysts consider an increase in gas production as negative. Oil and gas companies are looking forward to generate attractive returns from natural gas production. Moreover,

Religious Liberty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Religious Liberty - Essay Example Justice Antonin Scalia dissented in the given case stating that the Act’s stated purpose that is â€Å"protecting academic freedom† stood to be a legitimate secular purpose. In other sense, Justice Scalia believed that the considered academic freedom also included within its ambit the students’ right to be exposed to religious views and indoctrination. The majority opinion seems more to be in consonance with the Supreme Court interpretation of the Establishment Clause in a historical context. In the light of Engel v. Vitale (1962) decision, it could be said that the inclusion of such texts, dogmas, practices and theories in the school curricula that adhered to a specific religion amounted to a violation of the Establishment Clause. However, if one takes into consideration the ruling in Zorach v. Clauson (1952), it could be said that the Supreme Court could have modified its ruling by leaving the study of creationism in Public Schools as an optional choice, subject to the opinions and considerations of the specific students. The ruling in Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971) also supports the Edwards ruling, as inculcation of religious courses at state expenses amounted to an entanglement between the state and the religion. Besides, in a historical context, the United States Constitution has always been averse to Fundamentalist views supportiv e of religious literalism and contrary to a liberal scientific

The Factors Affecting Recruitment

The Factors Affecting Recruitment Selecting the right person for the right job is the very important for every organization. Nowadays this has become more critical in IT firms as there is very high demand for IT professionals in the industry, hence the turnover is very high. HR management principles include the following aspects Staff management is putting the workforce in a place like recruitment. It is developing that workforce so that staff can meet the changing demands of patient care by role redesign and personal development. It is assuring staff of job satisfaction. Human resources management (HRM) is the logical and strategic focus to managing the most valuable assets of an organization the people working there who individually and collectively contributing to the achievement of business objectives. The terms human resource management and human resources (HR) have largely supplanted the term personnel management as a description of the processes involved in the management of people in organizations. Simply put, human resources management means the employment of people, the development of their capabilities, using the maintenance and compensation of their services in line with the work and the requirement of the organization. HRM strategy A human resources management strategy refers to the media about how to apply the specific functions of human resource management. The function of a human resources organization may have policies for recruitment and selection, disciplinary procedures, policies, reward / recognition, a human resource plan, or policy learning and development, yet all these functional areas of resource management humans must be aligned and correlated to correspond with the overall business strategy. A strategy for human resources management is therefore a general plan on the implementation of specific areas of human resource management functions. Human resource management involves three processes. They are: Organizational planning Planning process is involving identifying an organizations short term and long term objectives, formulating and monitoring specific strategies to achieve their goals Staff acquisition The process of staff acquisition is getting the needed personnel assigned to and working on the project. Team development Team development can be defined as the process of building skills individually and group for project performance. Employee self-service portal, Manager Online, etc. are the tools currently available to management practice of this style. Performance bonds linked to pay the premiums, or have any type of variable compensation plan can be an incentive and disappointment, on the basis of how to manage and communicate. Bono must be designed so that people understand that there is no payment unless the company hits a certain level of profitability. Additional criteria could be the team success and individual performance. Never pay with bonus without measuring performance, unless a legal obligation. 360-Degree Performance Management Feedback System this system, which seeks the views of older people (including the boss), peers and subordinates, has been increasingly adopted as the best of all available methods to collect performance information. Gone are the days of hard work to impress one person, now the opinions of all matter, especially if you are in a leadership role (at any level). Each person on the team is responsible for giving relevant feedback, positive and constructive. Such systems also help in identifying leaders for higher level positions in the organization. Senior managers can use this information for their own development. Develop a system of evaluation that clearly links the performance of individual with business goals and priorities. Each employee must have clearly defined information relationships. Self-rating as part of the assessment process enables employees. The assessment is more righteous if it relies on records of regular counseling and accomplishments of employees, monitoring throughout the year. For a more objective, besides the immediate supervisor, all employees must be evaluated by the next higher level (often called a guard). Cross functional feedback, if obtained by the immediate superior of another manager (for whom the work of this employee is also important), will add to the fairness of the system. A relative ranking of all subordinates reporting to the same manager is another tool for assessing equity. The standardization of the evaluation is another dimension of improvement of fairness. Knowledge Exchange Adopt a systematic approach to ensure that knowledge management supports strategy. Knowledge of the store in databases to provide greater access to information published by the company or employees at the gates of knowledge of the company. When an employee returns after attending the competencies or skills development program, sharing essential knowledge with others may be required. However, what to store and how to maintain a knowledge base requires deep thinking to avoid disorder. The performers landmark Create profiles of top performers and make these visible through the intranet, bulletin boards, etc. It will encourage others to put on their best, creating a competitive landscape inside the company. If a systems approach is the high performance flat can surely prevent disgruntlements. Open discussions and feedback mechanism Ideas rule the world. Large organizations recognize, promote and implement the great ideas. Employees are the greatest source of ideas. The only thing that can stop great ideas flooding your organization is the lack of an appropriate mechanism to capture ideas. Open discussions of the house, staff management meets, suggestion boxes and ideas capture tools such as critical incident diaries are the building blocks that can help administrators identify and develop talent. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Ceremonies reward just recognize talent does not work; you must combine it with ceremonies where recognition is broadcast. As for the dollar check is often less important than listening to the applause of his colleagues in a public forum. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Employees with the Unexpected Delight The last but not least way to delight your employees from time to time with unexpected things that may come as a reward, a gift certificate or well done. Reward not only the best performers, but also some others who are in need of motivation to showcase its potential. Recruitment procedures Recruitment is the process of searching the candidates for employment and selects them to apply for jobs in the organization. Magic Window In The Novelle :: essays research papers

The â€Å"magic window† gives us a unique insight into the psyche of the protagonist and into the very fabric of the literature itself. It shows us a different perspective and enables us to see a deeper level of the character where only their instincts are visible. The concept of embodying the theme of a story in one symbol is very interesting as it clearly defines the various levels of involvement from the main character, from the superficial right down to the detailed depicts the state of being of the protagonist throughout the novelle. From the analysis of the central symbol, it would seem that the all actions and events of the novelle are deeply linked so it appears that this â€Å"magic window† is indeed magic. In the Ninth Story from the Decameron the central symbol is the falcon that is one of Federigo’s last possessions. On a superficial level the falcon is well known for being a noble and dignified creature and we see this reflected in Federigo’s own noble disposition. After losing all his money and belongings he still does not ask anybody for money. He accepts his situation as being a result of his own actions. â€Å"knowing that he would never be able to live the way he wished in the city, he moved†¦ to where his farm was†¦ asked nothing of anyone and endured his poverty patiently. On a deeper level the falcon is a direct reflection of Federigo’s character. This falcon is well known for its skill, it is the â€Å"best that ever flew† and Federigo â€Å"of noble birth, no matter how poor he is† is well known and respected for his nobility and dignity. The two have similar qualities and thus by analyzing the central symbol of the falcon we are able to see through the â€Å"magic window† into Federigo’s own character. In Die Taube the central symbol is that of the pigeon that stands at Jonathan’s door. This symbol is very complex and has many levels to it. Jonathan’s characteristics are mirrored by the actions of the pigeon throughout the novelle. The pigeon creates the â€Å"magic window† through which we can see deep into Jonathan’s psyche. It is a symbol of Jonathan’s fears and inability to adapt socially. The first description of the pigeon is of its eye, the manner in which Jonathan describes this is very eerie. He describes the eye as â€Å"ganz nackt, ganz schamlos† and he seems to linger on the one sidedness of this encounter.

In 2004, 92. 5% of the total group profit derived from the chronic care divisions ostomy and continence care, which have very stable product lines. However, as a part of the company’s 2008 strategy consideration revenues were supposed to be ensued by a total of 20% of products established within the past 4 years, dating no further back than 2004. Coloplast is one of the companies that were born globally. In the year of its foundation already every second ostomy bad was being exported, by 2005 97% of its revenue was generated outside of Denmark. Until 2001, the company had six major production facilities within Denmark. In 1999, the manag ement level, for the first time, took a closer look at the idea of offshoring its production to a low-cost location. During the following thorough evaluation period the organization carried out extensive feasibility studies and interview Danish companies, which had already offshored to one of the locations in question. The evaluation committee undertook field trips to Poland, Ireland, Czech Republic and Hungary. Eventually, it had been decided to offshore to Hungary.Coloplast’s managers where aware of the language barrier on the Hungarian side as well as the social impact problems due to the redeployment of Danish employees, hence they took precautions to avoid work stoppages; they introduced an open and honest communication policy. The substantial one-off costs could be minimized by transfer or reassignment of employees in combination with the usage of voluntary attrition and early retirement. However, the offshoring process uncovered and amplified the weaknesses of the dece ntralized organization. The management realized in order to effectively transfer the knowledge to Hungary they had to introduce standardization into their production process. The company’s internal organization had to be changed very fundamentally. Offshoring to Hungary was a great success and the company gained considerable knowledge. Estimates forecasted an annual growth rate of 10% leading to a doubled production in 2010, which would require 50% more staff and space. Despite the fact that the Hungary project went very ell, management acknowledge that they had missed out on a few great opportunities concerning for example local sourcing, because the offshoring organization had consumed most of the managerial capacities. The main question for Rasmussen was now: â€Å"Should the internal organizational issues be tackled fist and the offshoring to China initiated later, or is the knowledge they have gained and the guideline they have derived from the last offshoring project en ough to proceed immediately without the risk of overseeing important issues again?

William Boldwood Essay Example

William Boldwood Essay Example William Boldwood Paper William Boldwood Paper William Boldwood loves Bathsheba with an intense and suffocating love that was sparked by a meaningless Valentine prank that came about only by chance. Bathsheba writes the card in jest and humour but Boldwood takes it completely the wrong way. In chapter fifteen we see how the joke has affected him deeply; He was conscious of its presence even when his back was turned Her unrevealed eyes had watched every curve as she formed it; her brain had seen him in imagination the while. Why should she had imagined him? It affects Boldwood so much that he dreams about the unknown woman who wrote the card; Whenever Boldwood dozed she took form, and comparatively ceased to be a vision: when he awoke there was the letter justifying the dream. Before Boldwood falls in love with Bathsheba, he is known throughout the town as a secluded bachelor leading a quiet life, he had no interest in women whatsoever. So when he does unleash his love Bathsheba it affects his life with no chance of it ever returning to the way it was. Bathsheba never actually loves him but leads him on and keeps him hanging on by a thread. She feels sorry for Boldwood because he loves her so much and guilty because it is her that has caused these consequences; Dont, dont say it I can not bear you to feel so much. He proposes marriage to her; But you will just think in kindness and condescension think if you cannot bear wit me as a husband! But deep down she does not want to marry him, she just does not have the heart to say so. As a result of this, she says she will think about his offer; I may speak to you again on the subject. , Yes. By doing this Bathsheba only leads him on further and intensifies his love for her, making the situation so much worse. We see how strong his fixation and love is for Bathsheba when he meets her on the road in a state of pain and fury after receiving her letter of rejection. He is in such pain he blames her for making him fall so in love; But, I say, t here was a time when I thought nothing of you, cared nothing of you, and yet you drew me on I took for earnest what you insist was jest and now this that I pray to be jest you say is awful. He is livid with Troy and Bathshebas feelings for him. Boldwood feels that Troy has stolen Bathsheba from him; Why did Troy not leave my treasure alone? Boldwood also makes a reference to the Scarlet fever which he suggests is what has bewitched Bathsheba; Dazzled by Brass and Scarlet! This could be Hardys reminded that this was one of the common occurrences that happened amid women of that time. These enraged and jealous comments are a couple of the many dynamics that show us how possessive and obsessive Boldwoods character really is. Other examples of this are his rekindled hope for Bathshebas heart at the thought of Troys death; Thereupon a strange fire lighted up Boldwood eye, and his face flushed with the suppressed excitement of an unutterable thought. , his persistency at the Christmas party; Be gracious and give up a little to me, when I would give up my life for you! , his drastic action at Troys return; He had turned quickly, taken one of the guns, cocked it and at once discharged it at Troy. In chapter fifty-five, we see how deep Boldwoods obsession really is when Gabriel and Bathsheba find jewellery dated and marked for the day of Bathshebas and Boldwoods supposed wedding; above all there was a case of jewellery They were all carefully packed in paper, and each package was labelled Bathsheba Boldwood, a date being subjoined six years in advance. These are all reasons for Boldwoods refusal. Bathsheba refuses Gabriel Oak because he offers her the same kind of life style that Boldwood does; At home by the fire, whenever you look up there I shall be and whenever I look up, there will be you. Gabriel offers her everything he feels would make a farmers wife happy; You shall have a piano in a year or two farmers wives are getting to have pianos now And have one of those little ten pound gigs for market and nice flowers, and birds cocks and hens I mean And a frame for cucumber like a gentleman and lady. Once again this is a classic example of the tamed and adventurous life that Bathsheba does not want to lead. Bathsheba leads Gabriel on right from the beginning of the story by running after him when he has left her house, because he aunt told Gabriel that Bathsheba has and has had many sweethearts. Gabriels original intention of visiting the house is to ask for Bathshebas hand in marriage, so he is thoroughly over excited to see her running after him; It was Bathsheba Everdene, Gabriels colour deepened. When she confesses that she has only come forth to flatten the rumour about her many sweethearts, his hopes are once again dashed; To run after anyone like this, and then say you dont want him! Gabriel never stops loving Bathsheba, but his love differs from Boldwoods because it is not pushy and desperate, but patient and accepting. Gabriel is the only one with which Bathsheba has a meaningful and growing relationship. He is always completely honest with her even when she does not want him to be, an example of this is in chapter twenty; Well what is your opinion of my conduct? That it is unworthy of any thoughtful, and meek, and comely woman. He risks his life to save her farm by recovering her ricks in the midst of a great storm; Then Oak went back again, ascended tothe top, stepped off the ladder for greater expedition, and carried on thatching. When her flock are close to death, Gabriel is theonly one who can save them but Bathsheba has fired him in a haughty row. In this instance, he teaches her humility by forcing her to swallow her pride for the sake of her sheep; He says beggars cant be choosers her word in reply being Dont abandon me, Gabriel! These acts show that Gabriels love has always been pure, consistent and always growing, maybe this is why Hardy used the name Oak (Oak tree) as an appropriate fit for his guardian Angel (Gabriel) character. After Bathshebas tragic ordeal being witness to Troys death, she decides to marry Gabriel. She decides to do this because Gabriel suggests to her that he is going to leave, I shall not be your mistress much longer shall I, Gabriel? Well no. She realises that Gabriel is her best friend and after the tribulation she has been through, she finds out that he is the one she really wants along with the life he has to offer her. In conclusion, I believe that one can account for Bathshebas choice of husband in Troy because his superficial appearance of gallantry complimented her vain and naive nature at that point in her life. However, as the book lengthens we watch Bathsheba grow into the mature and graceful woman who is ready for a steady relationship. I feel that Bathsheba and Gabriel should have a happy life together, appreciating love and each other. Bathsheba has changed a lot since his first proposal of marriage because the many effects love can have on the heart have tamed her wild shrew-life spirit. She has grown to know that lust, appearance and excitement are not everything. She has developed into a wise woman who knows the hardships of life and no longer wants the fantasy life she once expected from a man.

The Rise of El Chapo Professor Ramos Blog

The Rise of El Chapo On January 8th, 2016, the world watched in awe as news broke out that Joaquà n â€Å"El Chapo† Guzmn, the worlds most powerful drug kingpin, had finally been recaptured by Mexican marines in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. His final capture had occurred six months after he had escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico through a mile-long underground passage. Today, Guzman awaits trial in a maximum security prison in New York. How did a young rancher from the mountains of Sinaloa become one of the most wanted billionaire drug lords in the world? What caused him to be transformed into a ruthless monster? Born on April 4, 1957, Joaquà n Guzmn was from a poor family in the small Mexican town of Badiraguato. His father was very abusive and supported the family by growing marijuana for the drug trade. His father would send his sons to the top of the mountains to harvest their crops.   At fifteen years old, he began growing, harvesting, and distributing   poppy, a plant used to make heroin, and marijuana. He and his cousins managed an entire plantation for marijuana. Little by little he increased his profits to fully support his family. His deeply rooted family background in the drug trade was a major cause for his transformation into a monster. Another major cause in the creation of his monstrosity is his close ties to powerful kingpins. He discovered that his profits can be greatly increased with the distribution from cocaine. He found himself working for the largest cartel at the time, the Guadalajara cartel, and legendary Colombian kingpin, Miguel ngel Fà ©lix Gallardo. Guzmn would started to control his business with brutality and force by putting a bullet through any of his smugglers who were late upon delivery. Recognized by Gallardo for his talent in the business, Guzmn is promoted to Gallardo’s right hand man to manage multiple shipments to be distributed into the United States. After the arrest of Miguel ngel Fà ©lix Gallardo, the Guadalajara Cartel broke up, leaving conflict in the drug trade business. Finally, after many altercations with other drug lords, Guzman had gained some control over Sinaloa. This allowed him to push his aggressive and genius business tactics to new heights. Guzman founded the Sinaloa Cartel, making him a billionaire. These â€Å"achievements†   have made El Chapo to be of a mythical, godlike status among the Mexican people. In Sinaloa, he is considered their savior because he supports the local cities by buying churches, gyms, paving roads. Etc. The townspeople believe that he is everything that the government wasn’t. The townspeople loved and respected him to the point that they would alert him when the authorities were near. He is also honored through folk-songs, or narco corridos. In Los Tucanes de Tijuanas song, El Papa de los Pollitos, El Chapo is perceived as the absolute ruler. The songs talks about how he rules with an iron fist and anyone who crosses him will be dealt with. The title is roughly translated to the father of the baby chicks, which means boss of all the bosses.   This fully supports his comeuppance as a monster because not only does he do terrible things but he has a large group of people that support and praise him. According to thesis one of Jeffrey Cohen’s Seven Theses of Monster Culture, the â€Å" Monster’s body is a Cultural Body (Cohen).† This means that the monster is a result of the current cultural movement or ideas. I believe that Joaquà n â€Å"El Chapo† Guzmn and every other cartel member are monsters in modern society because of the War on Drugs.   In 1969 the term â€Å"war on drugs† was used by Richard Nixon to enforce a set of laws that would discourage the use, distribution, and consumption of drugs. It resulted in an effort to eliminate the recreational use of any drug deemed illegal and the incarceration of one million citizens every year. The â€Å"War on Drugs† is a very big political and social issue today. El Chapo would not have been a successful criminal if drugs did not need to be obtained illegally. El Chapo and other cartel members are a result of the culture because the war on Drugs has been a major political focus. The major cause in creation of this monster is his own creation. The Sinaloa Cartel is the largest and most powerful drug trafficking organization in the western hemisphere. The organization brings in roughly three billion dollars a year (Drug Lords). The organizations control and networking reaches every single major city in the United States, and operates in seventeen Mexican states and over fifty countries.   The success and power of the Sinaloa Cartel is owed to the genius strategies of El Chapo making it his biggest cause in the creation of his monstrosity. Today, El Chapo is an media icon and the face of the war on drugs. He is the face of one of the most dangerous and powerful drug trafficking organization in the world that continues to be a threat to the U.S. national security today.   He has given a cause to support the end of allowing immigrants to our country and fear the cartel and gang members that come out of Mexico. A huge part of President Donald Trumps agenda was immigration security by building a wall. This wall is said to keep out dangerous criminals, such as El Chapo, from Mexico. Another effect he has today is his representation in the media.   A song titled, â€Å"El Chapo† by hip-hop artist, The Game, gives the impression that he is godlike and absolute by continuously repeating the lines, â€Å" El Chapo. I am the God.† He is name-dropped in various hip-hop songs to represent absolute power, wealth and ruthlessness. There are many causes for the creation of Joaquin Guzman. From his family history, to his genius business strategies to his ruthless way, he was destined to be what we fear. He is merely a face to put on the countless other monsters that are still roaming free in world of the cartel. Fortunately, this monster will be locked up for a very long time. Diplomacy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Diplomacy - Essay Example The evolving elements of world politics can be identified as the accelerators of the transformation to the modern day diplomacy. There exist a direct impact of politics on diplomacy and diplomatic relations between nations. Numerous changes have been realized in the evolution of diplomacy. The old elements of diplomacy did not become extinct; they only evolved and changed with the times. Characteristics of diplomacy The old diplomacy The old diplomatic system can be characterized by the use of bilateral negotiations. This negotiation takes place between two nations or two representatives (Rourke, 263). In the context of this system, the negotiating parties were only presenting the views they had been sent to present. The process usually took long because of the limited power bestowed on the diplomats. Rarely did the heads of states meet face-to-face to negotiate anything. The use of emissaries was an extremely popular characteristic of the old diplomacy. Modern era diplomacy The mode rn diplomacy can be characterized by multilateral negotiations (Rourke, 263). These involve numerous countries negotiating towards a common goal. The rising number of global issues of concern can be attributed to the adoption of this system. The changes have been necessitated by one issue, like global warming, affecting many countries. Bilateral negotiations take place through conferences and meetings of several parties with a common goal. The comparisons Though diplomacy can be said to have evolved, the goal it aims at achieving remains the same. Reaching an agreement or coming up with a solution to a problem remains the core goal of diplomacy. This conclusion does not regard any of the diplomatic systems. However, numerous evolvements have created a change in diplomacy, and hence the transition from the old diplomacy to the modern era diplomacy. Numerous aspects on how diplomacy was conducted have changed to accommodate the modern are diplomatic system. Within the context of tradi tional diplomacy, it was rare to see a diplomatic congregation of more that two nations. This has, however, become the trend in the modern diplomacy (Rourke, 264). Negotiations between two parties have become rare. This can be attributed to the increasing level of global issues. Traditionally, there were few issues affecting more than one nation. While it was rare to see heads of state meeting personally with one another at a negotiation table in the old diplomacy, this happens severally in the modern case. Emissaries represent governments at the initial stage of diplomacy in the modern system. When the negotiations reach advance stages, the heads of states come into the negotiations. The role of heads of states in the old system was to send emissaries. Negotiations were carried out purely by the emissaries. Negotiations by heads of states have been termed as having dangerous repercussions should they fail to reach an agreement. Since it comes as the final solution, failure at this stage becomes catastrophic. In the modern era diplomacy, Presidents have been discouraged from taking part in negotiations. Secrecy of diplomatic proceedings was a top priority in the old diplomacy. The emissaries were required to deliver the message only to the specified person. In the modern era diplomacy, the proceedings go on in public. Reports are published about the proceedings of conferences and made public. The element of secrecy has been dealt away within the

Submit short report that assembles the teams final results for Essay

Submit short report that assembles the teams final results for tackling a problem or creating a solution to the project - Essay Example It is affordable to all patients and readily available as the system is flexible, can move from one place to another. Congestion in hospitals by patients with fatal chronical diseases need to be at lower levels by administering health programs via PHM systems. It helps hospitals deliver a variety of health services to a greater population resulting in improvement in health conditions. A nation with improvement in health sectors obtains tremendous benefits like it readily consist of healthy individuals to provide labor. Improves country’s productivity reduces death rates to significant levels and provides the country with the chance of having innovation and creativity as well. The PHM project requires electronically intensive equipments making use of decision support systems. This reduces the manual work fatigue to medical staff if they are to perform the work, therefore; there is a reduction in workload of the medical staff. However, the system contains errors that would result in wrong medical description or diagnosis to the patients. The problems are in two classifications the system error and human errors. The system errors include the syntax and logical anomalies, which may be due to system malfunction. The errors can be because of overloading the systems or as well as unexpected errors, which would require repetition of the ongoing process to get the correct results. The human errors serve as the main setback towards achieving the set objectives of the program. The set objectives being, provision of sufficient medical attention to patients with chronic diseases. It is unfortunate and ironic that human beings have the audacity to be the factor that the project fails to be 100% successful. The significant human errors includes Although patients include false information in order to get medical treatment, it is unfortunate as there would be wrong results that can cause serious problems for both the p[patient and
